Why Are Straight Lines Looking Wavy? Early Signs of Wet vs. Dry Macular Degeneration

If straight lines suddenly appear bent, crooked, or wavy, it is important not to dismiss the change. Distorted central vision can be a sign of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition that affects the macula - the part of the retina responsible for detailed, straight-ahead vision.

At Alamo Eye Care, we evaluate patients in San Antonio for changes that may indicate dry or wet macular degeneration. Because these two forms of AMD can progress differently, recognizing changes in your vision and having them evaluated promptly is important.

What Does Wavy Vision Look Like?

Vision distortion caused by changes in the macula may be noticeable when looking at objects that should appear straight. Door frames, window blinds, lines of text, or tile grout may suddenly seem bent or uneven.

Other symptoms that may occur include:

•          Blurry or distorted central vision

•          Straight lines appearing wavy or crooked

•          A dark, blurry, or blank spot near the center of vision

•          Difficulty recognizing faces or reading small print

•          Colors appearing less vivid

•          Increased difficulty seeing in dim lighting

These symptoms can have several possible causes, so a comprehensive eye evaluation is needed to determine what is affecting your vision.

Dry Macular Degeneration Often Progresses Gradually

Dry AMD is the more common form of age-related macular degeneration. It develops as the macula gradually becomes thinner with age and can progress over several years. Early dry AMD may cause few or no noticeable symptoms. As the condition advances, patients may begin experiencing mild central blurriness, difficulty seeing in low light, or distortion. Regular eye exams are especially important because retinal changes may be detected before they significantly interfere with everyday vision.

Wet Macular Degeneration Can Change Vision Quickly

Wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels develop beneath the retina and leak blood or fluid. This can damage the macula and lead to faster changes in central vision.

A new onset of wavy lines, sudden central blurriness, or a dark spot in your vision should be evaluated promptly. While both advanced dry and wet AMD can cause distorted vision, rapid changes can be particularly concerning for wet AMD.

How We Evaluate Macular Changes

When patients in San Antonio notice wavy or distorted vision, we can examine the retina and macula for signs of AMD or another retinal condition. A dilated eye examination and retinal imaging, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), can provide a detailed view of the macula and help identify changes that require monitoring or treatment.
